Digital Modes

MY DIGITAL MODE PAGE

So you've got a computer in the shack, it might be old but that doesn't matter. The soundcard works as well, OK there's no stopping you now! You're nearly on the road to working the world using the new ( for me anyway! ) digital data modes running very little power if you wish and using tiny segments of the band if you use the amazing PSK 31 mode.

A few years ago I began trying out all the different digital Modes in QSO with my friend Rob, G3TFM. I must say that I have now become addicted to PSK 31, soundcard PACKET,  SSTV and most of the other 'designer modes' as well. I've worked stations from far and wide using low power and my doublet antenna. I use the excellent MixW software for the digital modes and the equally outstanding MMSSTV for slow scan TV. Both are available as free downloads ( MixW demo), find them from the links below. Lots of other software for the different modes are freely available too. An internet search for the likes of UI-view, MFSK, HELLSCHREIBER and OLIVIA will point you in the right direction to the software! The links below will direct you to interesting sites dealing with PSK, SSTV and PACKET etc. They will provide the info you need to get your digital mode station up and running....you will have fun I promise!

Recently, with the help of Rob G3TFM, I have set up a PACKET RADIO station (my main user mode at the moment) and have been very active on UI-view, the versatile APRS software which runs happily using AGWPE. AGW packet engine is software that will run in the background while using your main packet program, enabling UI-view and other compatible packet software to operate using the computer soundcard. No external TNC is then required! Below is a screen grab showing my QTH on the map in UI-view.

Below is a a UI-view screen shot of my friend Massy, JA6NKA driving his car labeled JA6NKA-9 back to his home QTH in Kagoshima, Southern Japan. I have regular contacts with him using the messaging system built into Ui-view, while connected to the APRS server online. I also use Echolink to work him through his repeater JA6NKA-R, which is on the map near his home QTH.

Again with the help of Rob G3TFM, I now have an active mobile APRS station so please look out for G4SKN-9 on your map. I am using my old IC-240 for this mode of operation and I activate the system on most of my car journeys.

If you become addicted like me and wish to know more about it all, then purchase 'DIGITAL MODES FOR ALL OCCASIONS' by Murrray Greenman, ZL1BPU, you can order this from the RSGB. This is essential reading for the digi mode enthusiast!
